Enryo is a state of mind or way of behaving in which we refrain from doing something so as not to cause inconvenence or distress to another. For example , when you are invited to dinner by someone who is not very close , you are expected to decline to show that you have some self restraint . If you accept it instantly , you will be labeled rude . With too much Enryo, however , you will never get close to a person . It is difficult to tell how far you should
show the feeling of Enryo since it depends on the situation. One thing that is certain is that such a habit of seeking distance toward a specific person is a very Japanese way of balancibg and harmonizing interpersonal relationships.
